Most "nicotine tests" are actually cotinine tests. Here's why:

Nicotine has a very short half-life of approximately 2 hours. It's rapidly metabolised by the liver into cotinine. Cotinine has a half-life of 15–20 hours — about 10 times longer — making it a far more useful biomarker for tobacco exposure.
